Introducing Laythio: We Tell Stories that Dare to Break Through

At some point, every organization builds their story in an echo chamber. Many never leave because it’s comfortable. It’s validating. It’s repeatable. 

How do they get stuck here? When building upon an idea, the story isn’t top of mind.

A tech company may be marketing its sophisticated platform to a prospect; a nonprofit may be pitching its mission to a grantmaker; or a school district could be proving its compliance to state monitors. At the end of the day, they all must demonstrate functionality. Or there’s no path forward.

Functionality alone isn’t enough to stand out, though. A bold, original story draws and cultivates an audience. We founded Laythio because we’re seeing fewer and fewer of these stories breaking through in grant applications, proposals, and brand messaging. 

John and I began our careers in journalism, where we learned to get to the point. Since then, we’ve accumulated over 20 collective years managing multi-million dollar grant programs and driving communications strategies for the federal government, nonprofits, startups, public companies, and small businesses. We saw many organizations couldn't get their simplest messages across. 

The data in one survey says as much: When asked for their manager’s biggest area of improvement, nearly one in four direct reports list “having a clear vision and strategy for the team.” Executives aren’t in lockstep either: In another MIT Sloan Management Review survey of 124 companies, only six of those firms' executive teams had 80% or greater alignment on top priorities. 

As organizations evolve, their people have neither the time nor cross-functional awareness to connect the dots. Instead, they patch together concepts from isolated conversations, meetings, emails, presentations, or perceptions. No one tells the same story.

As a result, institutions are blending into the background. They’re passed over for funding and spurned by prospects. Many don’t even notice the root of the problem.
